Private by design: your book stays on your device

Learn the words that matter before you open the book.

Foreword reads your EPUB or PDF in the browser, ranks the vocabulary you are most likely to stumble on, and turns it into study cards with translations, explanations, and real sentences from the book.

How it works

From a file on your laptop to a study session in minutes.

Three steps. The heavy lifting happens in your browser, so even a 600-page novel is ready before your coffee cools.

  1. 01

    Upload the book

Drop in an EPUB or a text-based PDF. Foreword extracts chapters, metadata and language locally and fingerprints the file so you never import the same book twice.

  2. 02

    Prepare the vocabulary

Words and phrases are ranked by difficulty for your level, frequency in the book, how early they appear, and usefulness. Only the shortlist plus short snippets reach the AI, which writes the cards.

  3. 03

    Study, then read

Flip flashcards, answer multiple-choice questions, or recall translations from memory. Every answer updates the card's state, so the queue shrinks as you learn.

Built for readers

Everything you need to read with confidence.

Foreword is opinionated about one thing: you should spend your time reading, not looking words up.

  • Your book never leaves the device

Parsing, ranking and hashing happen in a Web Worker. The server only stores ranked words, short snippets and your progress.

  • Smart ranking, not a dictionary dump

Difficulty for your level, in-book frequency, earliness, story importance, and phrases and idioms all feed a single priority score.

  • Three ways to study

Flashcards for a first pass, multiple choice for recognition, recall for real mastery. Cards graduate to Known as you prove you know them.

  • A short scene for hard words

Stuck on an abstract word? Generate a five-second clip that shows its meaning, powered by fal.ai and TanStack AI.

  • English and Hebrew, both ways

The interface, the cards and the layout switch direction properly. Book text and translations each render in their own direction.

  • Take your words anywhere

Export any book's vocabulary as CSV for Anki, spreadsheets or printing.

Your next book is waiting. Meet its vocabulary first.
